Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen earned an Olympic bronze medal in 2016 and secured gold five years later at the Tokyo Games.

At 30 years old and standing 1.94m (6ft 4in) tall, Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen is steadily working his way back into form after suffering an ankle injury at the Singapore Open in late May. Despite the setback, Axelsen maintains a positive outlook, stating that he is focused on preparation and supported by a strong team. His resilience is evident, reflecting the nickname “An Sai Long,” or ‘calm competitive dragon,’ given to him by his Mandarin teacher, a language he speaks fluently.

Axelsen, along with fellow Dane Anders Antonsen, stands out in a sport traditionally dominated by Asian players, with China’s Shi Yuqi currently holding the top spot. Axelsen’s remarkable career began with a world junior championship victory in Mexico at the age of 16, making him the first European to achieve this. Over the past decade, his achievements have included setting a new record with a 39-match winning streak in 2022, surpassing the previous 31-match record held by Lin Dan.

Despite the physical challenges of aging and the wear and tear from an extensive career, Axelsen remains committed to his goals. Danish badminton official Jens Meibom acknowledges the uncertainty created by Axelsen’s injuries but also points out his high level of performance this spring. Axelsen himself is driven by the prospect of competing in Paris and remains actively engaged with his growing social media presence, using it to promote badminton and connect with fans.
